Tuesday Things

Goodies:

Finally remembering it's Tuesday and to do this ON a Tuesday
Caramel macchiato - like dessert with caffeine, hot or iced, both delicious
Clients who are nice and don't need incessant hand-holding AND pay bills immediately - sounds like a fantasy doesn't it? but I actually HAVE a client like this!
Sitting down and figuring out how to code something new and having it work!
Seeing light at the end of the packing tunnel. (I don't see it yet but I know I'm gonna like it.)
Finding a new tv show to watch online AND it has three seasons worth of shows to watch (the one I'm watching right now is Arrested Development - very funny, weird, quirky, well-written)

Baddies:

Packing up a whole houseful of stuff and that icky process of sorting and sorting and sorting
Boxes and boxes of stuff everywhere
Dust
Dust bunnies
ANTS - they just erupted here like a volcano and have swept through my house leaving prickly little ant carcasses and annoyance in their path
Many things about the medical and healthcare world - today it's the arrogance of some medical people making painful situations even worse. (I admit though for every baddy I've found in the medical world there seem to be at least a couple goodies... the problem is the baddies are so memorable.)

Second Life's 5th Birthday

The next couple weeks are the birthday celebration for Second Life which has been around for 5 years now. It's a nostalgic time for a lot of us. I watched a video of Philip Linden/Rosedale addressing a crowd at the opening event and I actually teared up when he was talking about some of the early days. I'm not really as ancient as some. My "rezday" as we call them was the 1st of June 2004. In fact one of the first things I remember in Second Life was the one year anniversary celebration.

In honor of the big event there are 20 sims which have been handed over to the community for exhibits, events, etc. The SL5B sims are teeming with cool things. I've maybe made it through half of them. Here's a little photo smorgasbord of a few that caught my eye.

The giant birthday cake reminds me a little of one of my first Second Life homes, a giant cakeplate in the sky. Mine wasn't nearly as grandscale as this which is colorful and full of decorations

The last two remind me of one of my very first houses in SL. It was intended to be a little white Greek, domed building but my building skills weren't very developed and I abandoned it when I couldn't figure out how to make a door work. That's when I started the cakeplate in the sky. Not only do buildings and landscapes change at the drop of a hat in SL, so do avatars. This was one of my very earliest looks, circa June 2004.

My first reaction is a bemused wtf?? But then, so many things are changing in this day and age and at such a rapid pace that I guess I just have to chuckle and go with the flow. I think it's only going to get stranger from here on out. And this is probably pretty tame compared to what will be going on 10, 20, 50 years from now. So, congrats to Thomas Beatie, pregnant man/former woman! More in this NY Times article.

iPod Touch

My husband recently got one when he bought a new MacBook and these things are cute! I admit I'm a laggard when it comes to handheld technology of any kind but I'm really amazed at how many things you can do on it (try playing the Maze game - how cool is it that this teeny little thing knows how it is oriented and is sensitive enough to roll a little ball along through the maze based on how you move "the Touch"?) and how beautiful the quality of the screen is. It's really gorgeous and crisp. AND it holds all your music. And photos. And other stuff. And you can play games. And surf. And instant message.

So suddenly as we're getting ready to leave for Norway the iPhone is appealing to me in ways it never has. And just in time, Apple comes out with the iPhone 3G AND makes it transferrable from the US to Europe. And cuts the price in half. Clearly it's all a sign! July 11th, iPhone 3G here I come!

Yay Spore Creature Creator! I just used the trial version of the creator, but I'm about to upgrade to the full version. I can't wait till the game comes out!

Soap & bowl

All handmade by Shanna Wheelock at Cobscook Pottery. The bowl is gorgeous. All shades of blue and swirly. The soaps smell wonderful. They're in the bowl on my desk making the room all fresh and fruity.
